Her Journey started because we kept meeting travellers in Kaohsiung who had seen the pagodas, eaten at a chain restaurant, and left thinking that was the city. It is not.
Kaohsiung is Taiwan's harbour city — a place of container cranes, Qing-dynasty gates, Japanese railway grids and morning markets that have not changed their layout in fifty years. It rewards anyone who slows down enough to notice, and it is almost impossible to read on your own if you do not speak Chinese.
So we do it with you. We walk one neighbourhood at a time, in English, at a human pace. We tell you the history, we take you to the food, and we answer the questions you have been quietly collecting since you landed in Taiwan.
Small groups on foot and on public transport. Two hours for a free walking tour, four for the full culture experience. A lot of stopping. Vendors who greet us by name. At least one moment where you eat something without knowing what it is, and then ask where to buy more.
We do not use flags, microphones or coaches. If it is hot, we sit down. If you want twenty more minutes at the temple, we take twenty more minutes at the temple.
Our free walking tours are exactly that — free. Tip at the end if you had a good time, whatever you think it was worth. Our paid tours are priced per person, and the rate drops as the group grows, because it should.
Nothing is prepaid. You pay us on the day, in person. On paid tours, all the food and drinks featured on the route are hosted by Her Journey.
Your guides
History, temples and the old walled city
Hsin is the one who will stop mid-sentence to read a stone tablet on a temple wall — and then tell you what it says, who paid for it, and what that family was arguing about in 1826. She grew up between Zuoying and the harbour, and she is the reason our tours start with why rather than what.
Food, markets and everything you should be eating
Lesley knows the market vendors by name, and most of their children too. She is the one who decides the tasting order, negotiates your allergies with a stall owner in Taiwanese, and refuses to let you leave without trying the thing you were suspicious of. Usually you end up asking for seconds.
